Sainte-Foy-la-Grande has much to offer, and our apartment is the perfect base to explore the region.
If you love history, the town was founded in 1255 by Alphonse de Poitiers, the brother of King Louis IX. The original street grid pattern remains. There are buildings from the late 13th Century onwards, including 15th century half-timbered houses. You can still see parts of the medieval wall. A drive along the Dordogne will take you to a number of castles from the Hundred Years War, such as the spectacular Chateau de Beynac, a fortress that sits upon a high cliff with breathtaking views, and Chateau de Castelnaud, which houses a museum of medieval warfare. At Les Eyzies you will find pre-historical sites including famous cave paintings.
If you love wine, we are in the Bordeaux appellation, and St Emilion is about 30 minutes away by car or train. The wines of nearby Bergerac and Monbazillac are not as famous but just as wonderful. The local wines are a treat!
If you love outdoor activities, kayaking, hiking, and fishing are popular in and around the town. Château des Vigiers Golf Course is about 10km from the Le Grand Appartement, with a bistro and a Michelin starred restaurant.
The wonderful city of Bordeaux is about an hour by car or train. Périgueux is about a one hour drive to the north, and the astonishing Sarlat is just less than two hours to the east, also accessible by train.
